Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) and Sustainability

Did you know that building construction accounts for 40% of carbon emissions and 62.1% of US office spaces larger than 50,000 sq feet are green builds1?

As our industry continues to prioritize environmentally responsible and resource-efficient buildings, questions are raised on which materials are best suited to achieve these goals while maintaining design and functional requirements.

Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) is recognized as one of the best materials for a green build.

What is Aluminum Composite Material (ACM)?

This is a three-layer metal sheet panel. There are two thin layers of aluminum sandwiching a non-aluminum core. This core is typically polyethylene or a fire-retardant mineral, like ALUCOBOND’s product. It’s known for being lightweight yet still firm.

Why is ACM a good choice for a green build?

Aside from being well known for a long lifespan of use and flexibility to be molded and shaped for aesthetic purposes, ACM is a sustainable choice for the following reasons.

  1. Energy Efficient: ACM is naturally well insulated, meaning when you choose ACM cladding for a building, it will naturally insulate both hot air and cool air to reduce energy use and costs.
  2. Recyclable: Aluminum is a highly recyclable material and using recycled aluminum saves up to 95% of the energy required to produce new aluminum*.
  3. Checking the box for Sustainable Building Certifications: If you opt for ACM when building, you will likely earn green building certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).
  4. Fire Resistant: When you opt for ACM with a fire retardant core, such as ALUCOBOND, you easily meet building codes and safety standards (your construction team will thank you!)

If you’re looking to shift towards the practice of sustainability with green buildings, ACM is an excellent choice. You don’t have to sacrifice form or function while at the same time, you’re positively contributing to the environment around you.
